BU14 TIER IV NCU BARCELONA GOLD MEDALIST

One goal, one game at a time Coach's efforts pay off in 'miracle' win for team

Annalise Klingbeil, For Neighbours

Published: Thursday, May 03, 2012

When the Juventus Barcelona soccer team, made up of 15 boys ages 12 and 13, won their final game at provincials, it was more than just a gold medal end to the season. "It was a miracle win for them," says coach Calvin Quadros. "I've never seen them so happy." The 2-1 win in Edmonton was the accumulation of months of hard work and marked just how far the boys had come. The indoor North Central United club team came together with the help of Bernie Adam, who runs mentoring programs for youth through an organization called Youth Unlimited.  In response to a need in the Sudanese community, soccer teams, made up of children living in a Calgary housing complex for new Canadians, were organized.  One such team was Juventus Barcelona, which began practices in October. The majority of the boys on the team are new Canadians, living in a southwest Calgary housing complex.  Despite more than two decades of coaching experience, Quadros was in new territory when he started coaching the team.  "We struggled, but somehow we made it through," he says.

Struggle they did. Al-most all of the boys had never played on an organized soccer team before. Quadros had a hard time getting the kids to even come to once-a-week practice. And, if they did show up, they didn't play as a team. They'd fool around. Fights broke out. There were behaviour and attitude problems.

Many of the boys were just learning English and Quadros struggled to communicate with the boys, given the language barrier. Busy parents didn't come to games or encourage their child to attend practice.

"I never gave up," Quadros says. "I kept on trying and working hard with them."

Quadros says he approached the season one game, one practice and one step at a time and eventually began to notice a change.

In addition to a weekly practice led by coach Quadros, Adam hosted weekly team building sessions at the boys' housing complex with whoever would show up.

Adam says over time, he noticed a change in the young men.

"When they first started, they were all individual players. They didn't get the idea of being a team," he says. Near the end of the season, they started to pass, work together and communicate. Quadros's persistence and Adam's team-building sessions paid off. The team won games. They finished first place in their division and won the city championships. Then, they went to Edmonton, in March, to compete in provincials. Quadros drove the team north in a van and they stayed at a hotel. They played four games in two days and won every game, winning by one goal in the gold-medal provincial championship game. Winning their final game and receiving medals and a trophy was an exhilarating moment for the hard-working boys and their coach. "They were cheering and jumping on me. I couldn't hold them. They've never experienced this. It was amazing," Quadros says. In mid-April, Quadros and Adam held a celebration for the boys and their families, in a community room at their housing complex. The coach finally got to meet some parents and the boys received certificates of accomplishment, highlighting individual skills like attitude or hard work.

It was an opportunity to celebrate each child.

"It made them feel really important," Quadros says. "It gave them a lot of confidence, they were very happy."

And, it also made Quadros feel important. Parents came up to him and told him, thanks to soccer, they'd seen a change in their boys - their attitudes had changed, their anger had decreased.

The entire indoor sea-son and "miracle" provincial championship win was a learning experience for the teenage boys, their coach and Adam.

"A lot of life lessons are being taught through sport," Adam says.

Collaboration with MSB and CWSC Soccer Clubs

NCU is pleased to announce a collaborative agreement with MSB and CWSC to pool players and hold joint try outs moving into Indoor 2012 /2013. We believe that by pooling our players, we will be able to provide an enhanced competitive program for all players, where all players will be able to play at their desired level of play. A survey will be sent out to all members to ascertain member perspectives on the proposed collaboration.

We would like to initiate our joint try outs for U10 and U12 age groups moving into the Indoor 2012 2013 season, with full collaboration by Outdoor 2013.

With approximately 80 teams and well over 1000 players, CWSC-MSB-NCU would be one of the biggest combined clubs in Calgary.

For Outdoor 2012, we will be looking at forming strategic alliances in the following specific age groups:

U14 Boys MSB and CWSC

U18 Boys CWSC and MSB in coordination with NorthSide Soccer (Edgemont, Hamptons, Northstar). In the U18B category, we will be looking to form a Tier 1 and Tier 2/3 team, and would welcome any players looking for an opportunity to play Tier 1 or 2/3.

Our recreational, inter-community house league programs will remain untouched, allowing players U8-U16/18 to play in their community. We will also continue to support our Community Partner U4-U8/10 house league programs.

Our organizations will be working together, starting in January 2012, to establish appropriate governance, administrative, and technical systems to ensure a seamless transition for all members.

U4 Program

Do your 3 year olds have a lot of energy? Look for our U4 program returning this spring. This program is an introduction for young players to the concept of soccer. The program will focus on having a lot of fun with fellow players and the soccer ball. Parent participation in this program will be encouraged.

Our U4 program will officially start the last week in April, we are targeting Wednesday, April 25 as the start date, as long as the weather cooperates.

The field we will play on is located North of the Soccer field designated as Tweed field, located North of Thorncliffe Greenview Community Association at Center Street and 56th Avenue NE.

Within the next couple weeks we will be contacting parents who have volunteered to assist in running the program and we will be having an orientation meeting at TG Community.

The session time is likely to be 6:15 - 7:15 each Wednesday, to be finalized at our orientation meeting.

All parents are expected to attend each session with their child, and we encourage all; parents to participate with their child as much as possible.

House League

The U6 and U8 house league program is a recreational program designed to introduce your child to the game of soccer, and most importantly, have a lot of fun! Games are scheduled for each Tuesday and Thursday, and teams are typically mixed. This format provides children the opportunity to play in a fun, non competitive environment. We offer technical training sessions for these groups throughout the spring to assist the kids and their coaches in basic skill development. The U10 to U18 age groups are entered by NCU into Calgary Minor Soccer Association (CMSA) leagues.

The CMSA leagues are city wide leagues with competition at multiple levels leading to inter-city and provincial championships. Evaluations for these teams may be required to ensure kids are placed on teams appropriate for their skill level. Game and practice times are dependant on scheduling by CMSA (games) and typically include at least one practice and one game per week. NCU strives to enter teams at all tier levels based on registrations.

Congratulations to GU18 2012 Slush Cup Gold Medal Winners!

To ALL NCU soccer parents

NCU Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents that actively volunteer for both the club and their teams.

As everyone is aware, NCU is run entirely by volunteers, parents like you and me that take time out of their busy schedule to ensure that the kids have a Club to play with.

As the seasons go by and the players either move on or get involved in other activities, their parents who actively volunteer with NCU also move on. The NCU club is always in need of more people to keep the club running.

This year the club is in immediate need of some key positions. These positions include:

Club Board of Directors - up to 3 positions available
Registrar - 1 position
Registrar assistants - 1 to 2 positions for data entry, in person help, etc
Referee Coordinator/Scheduler/Mentor
Equipment Manager
Field Scheduler
Gymnasium Scheduler
Age Group co-ordinators
Photo coordinator
CMSA liason
Webmaster

Please consider your involvement in NCU and one of these positions. The club will not flourish without parents/volunteers.

NCUSC focuses on the communities in the north central area of Calgary.

In NCUSC, every player and every team is significant and important to the success of our club.
